Complete Common mode solution to IEC 61000-4-16
IEC 61000-4-16 by the International Electrotechnical Commission 2015-12 has both long and short components and includes a sweep requirement. Common mode, or being used on two lines is a requirement in this immunity requirement. It covers from d.c. to 150kHz. The three main components of testing within this standard, are long form, higher voltage short, and sweep tests.
IEC and EN 61000-4-16 have been harmonized and are often thought of as interchangeable. This standard is covered under the Electromagnetic Compatibility(EMC) Directive 89/336/EEC. This standard is often referenced as a "basic test standard" and my not be explicitly shown on EMC declaration of conformity.
The causes of low frequency common mode disturbances are described in Annex A of this standard. The main cause is the electrical power source, these include:
-0Hz (DC) for telecommunications rooms, server rooms, etc.
-16.67Hz used by some electric rail and tram transportation.
-50Hz typically used in 230/415V low voltage "mains" systems in common place in Europe, UK, and many others
-60Hz used by 120/240V low voltage "mains" systems in the US, Philippines and many others.
