16 kV ESD Simulators

ESD simulators, commonly referred to as ESD guns, are used for system-level ESD immunity testing to evaluate the effects of electrostatic discharge (ESD) on the operation and reliability of electronic equipment. They generate controlled, repeatable discharge events that simulate real-world static electricity encountered during handling and operation. Commercial EMC testing is typically performed in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2, with simulators providing output voltages up to ±16 kV for air discharge. Some applications, particularly in the automotive industry and other high-reliability sectors, require testing at voltages up to ±30 kV.

ESD simulators are commonly characterized by their maximum contact and air discharge voltage levels, discharge waveform, and RC discharge network. For IEC 61000-4-2 testing, the simulator uses a 150 pF capacitor and 330 Ω series resistor to reproduce the specified discharge waveform and ensure consistent, repeatable test results. Many models also offer programmable test sequences, adjustable repetition rates, and remote control for automated EMC test environments.

While interfaces and features vary by manufacturer, compliant ESD simulators meet the waveform requirements of IEC 61000-4-2 and support both contact discharge and air discharge test methods. Complete ESD test systems typically include a ground return cable (ground strap), interchangeable discharge tips, and the accessories required to perform compliant ESD immunity testing in laboratory, product development, and production environments.
