    6/7kV Transient Generators

These transient test systems provide combination wave surge testing capabilities of at least 6 kV in accordance with IEC 61000-4-5. In addition to surge testing, they commonly support Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) testing to IEC 61000-4-4, Ring Wave testing to IEC 61000-4-12, and voltage dips and interruptions testing to IEC 61000-4-11 when used with the corresponding external accessories.

Most 6 kV systems also provide Ring Wave testing at the same output level and include an integrated Coupling Decoupling Network (CDN) for coupling surge, EFT, and Ring Wave disturbances onto single-phase AC power lines. External CDNs are available for three-phase power systems, DC power, and communication or signal lines, allowing the generator to be used across a broad range of product types. Ring Wave capability is typically found only in higher test level transient generator models, making 6 kV and 7 kV platforms the most common systems that support both combination wave and Ring Wave testing in a single instrument.

These test systems are often selected for specialized testing applications that exceed the standard IEC test levels. This includes ANSI/IEEE testing, as well as other specialized or product-specific standards with higher surge test levels. Models with approximately 6 kV surge capability are also typically required for use with high-power three-phase CDNs.

    Related Questions

No, not all generators are configured the same way, or can be. Some units have capabilities for ring wave testing to IEC 61000-4-12, others do not. Please check the products or reach out to our team if any specific testing capabilities are needed.

Not all of the transient generators at this test level have a built-in CDN. Most manufacturers today include it within the same generator, however the Teseq NSG 3060 does not have a built-in CDN. If you have questions about the couplers, please contact our team at info@ts-emc.com

In most case, both ANSI and IEC coupling methods are supported for Ring Wave testing. There are occasionally older rental test systems that may only support IEC 61000-4-12. If you have specific coupling requirements please contact our team at info@ts-emc.com.
