Overview
Standard Information
This standard relates to electrical fast transient (EFT) testing, providing immunity requirements and testing procedures. The goal of this International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard is a reproducible guide to evaluate equipment when exposed to fast transient/bursts on supply, signal, and control and earth ports. This Standard can be purchased on the IEC Webstore website. It defines test voltage waveform, range of test levels, pulse test equipment, verification procedures of test equipment, test set-up, and test procedures. Given the fast rise time of this occurrence grounding during testing is crucial.
Common Equipment
The test setup for this standard requires a ground reference plane, coupling device, decoupling device (if needed), and the EFT/Burst test generator. Exact requirements may vary slightly depending upon individual equipment under test requirements (EUT). We offer rentals of the pulse generators, coupling decoupling network (CDN), capcitive coupling clamp (CCL) and verification accessories. All active electrical systems come with current ISO 17025 accredited calibrations, and generators with associated software and license. The diagram below shows a typical setup designed for testing on mains power lines, including CDN.

These capabilities meet the required 4kV set forth in table 2 of IEC 61000-4-4, output voltage peak values. Many of these systems include surge capabilities designed for surge testing with the system, making them an ideal solution for IEC 61000-4-5 testing as well. Our rental systems include current ISO 17025 accredited calibrations, associated cables, software, and often a laptop arriving ready for testing to begin.
