Overview
General Testing Information
ANSI/IEEE C37.90-2005 series of standards provides test levels and associated methods for relay and relay systems used in electrical equipment. This standard has several sections each relating to different EMI series of tests. The majority of these test are power on tests, excluding the insulation related testing involved in the surge withstand capabilities (SWC) tests. This standard covers several common causes interference including Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), radiated immunity, damped oscillatory pulses, electrical fast transients (EFT), and surge testing. Specific considerations needs to be given to DOW and Surge test given fairly unique requirements.
Common test sections:
ANSI/IEEE C37.90.1 - SWC DOW Pulses & EFT
ANSI/IEEE C37.90.2 - Radiated Immunity
ANSI/IEEE C37.90.3 - Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Test Equipment
C37.90 surge requirements include a .5 joules at each test level of the 1.2/50us waveform, often making additional test generators required. The EM Test VSS 500N6 offer a easy to use turnkey system for this and other .5 joule test requirement, often used with relay testing. This surge generator also meets the product based requirements of IEC 60255-27. The damped oscillatory waveform (DOW) test system designed by EMC Partner, the MIG-OS-OS1 offers a compliant solution to the corresponding section of C37.90. This solution offers 3-phase 480VAC/24amp equipment under test (EUT) and control via front panel.
