Electrical Fast Transient Testing
General Testing Information
Fast transients or burst(s) are most often caused by arching associated with switch contacts during opening or closing. The arching associated with the switch often occur in short iterations, bursts, and cause interference in the associated electrical systems and equipment. The most commonly reference standard, IEC 61000-4-4 sets for voltage requirements of upwards of 4kV. This type of interference s coupled into power, control, signal and earth ports of the equipment under test (EUT) to determine the effect it will have on the function of the EUT. Below are the associated single and multiple pulses provided by Teseq NSG 3040 Transient systems.
Common Equipment
- Transient/EFT Generator
- Reference Plane
- Capacitive Coupling Clamp
- Oscilloscope
- EFT Verification Kit
- Associated Cords and Cables
Typical Setup (EM Test)
Below is a typical EM Test transient setup designed for EFT/Burst testing with a capacitive coupling clamp (CCL). This setup, with the clamp is typically used coupling EFT onto a variety of different IO/Data lines. Should testing to power mains be done, the system has an adapter to the front of the system allow for the EUT/DUT be connected directly. The Teseq CDN 3083-B100 offers coupling decoupler for 3-phase equipment up to 690V/100Amps.

Coupling Networks (CDNs)
Coupling Decoupling Networks (CDNs)
CDNs designed for EFT/Burst provide the necessary capabilities to place pulses directly onto mains power lines, often times AC and DC. Many transient generators have built in couplers designed for single phase capabilities usually around 200 volts 10 amps. The exact capabilities vary by generator and must be considered prior to rental. There are also a variety of external CDNs available allowing for interference testing on a variety of mains power including 3-phase. Unlike coupling for surge, burst doesn't require line synchronization, allowing some couplers to be used with a variety of generators. Often times, product specific 3-phase external CDNs offer both surge and burst coupling within the same unit.

CCL Clams & Monitoring
Capacitive Coupling Clamps (CCLs)
Coupling clamps are designed to couple bursts on data lines. These series of couplers are designed in accordance with IEC 61000-4-4 ed.3 published in 2012. Some variations on these clamps include safety covers which extend over the entire system. These clamps are often interchangeable given the requirements are placed by the standard, however connections to the associated generators can differ. We offer rentals of both Teseq CDN 3425 and Thermo KeyTek CCL, both individually or with the transient generator providing a complete solution. Associated adapters can be made for a variety of generators allowing for use with many systems.
