Overview

Ergonomic design and advanced functionality. The NSG 437 ESD simulator is designed to sit comfortably in the operator’s hand, with operating conditions constantly displayed and accessible on a bright, clear color touch display.

NSG 437 comprehensively fulfills virtually all international standard requirements. Based on over 60 optional discharge networks, the NSG 437 can meet any of today’s automotive manufacturers’ standards.

The simulator is simple, convenient and safe to use. The whole range of parameter settings including polarity selection, freely adjustable pulse repetition, counter functions and discharge detection is available up to the maximum discharge voltage.

The color touch display and keypad for parameter input shows the precise functional and test data with user-selectable language for convenient and safe operation worldwide. The simulator contains variable threshold selection for accurate discharge detection. This detection feature can be switched off when testing EUT’s with non-conductive surfaces, such as plastic housings. Pre-programmed settings for IEC 61000-4-2 and ISO 10605 ensure that the simulator is automatically set up correctly and the appropriate discharge network is installed. The actual RC value is displayed at all times. Molded HV discharge networks in solid cases eliminate ionization and leakage current effects. Precisely tuned combinations of RC components guarantee wave shape parameters to be within tolerances. A unique activity log is included so that the types and numbers of ESD simulations can be easily scrolled through to check what has been tested and in what timeframe.

The simulator is recalibrated and adjusted at every start. Additional features include freely adjustable pulse repetition rate, a special random generator function and an optional charge remover for discharging the EUT.

Components & Modules

The NSG 437 simulator is modularly constructed from a number of discrete
function units.

  • Base station - Mains connection required, contains the high voltage generator module
  • Pistol - Houses interchangeable discharge network, high voltage relay,
the exchangeable test finger, electronics and the touch sensitive input/display
    panel
  • Discharge Tip - Interchangeable discharge tip section for either air or contact discharge tips
  • Display - Touch screen allows for selection of testing parameters
  • Discharge Network - Latch open section on the pistol that allows for switching of discharge networks to meet a variety of testing requirements

Simplified Test Setup

Test standards such as the IEC/EN 61000-4-2, Ed. 1.2:2001 give detailed information about setting up a test rig, the organization of a test and the documentation.
The test engineer cannot be relieved of the duty to study the applicable test prescriptions closely and to adapt the conditions to the test object in question. The necessary documents can be obtained directly from the IEC, ANSI, IEEE, etc. or they can be obtained through the relevant national standards bureau.

The contact-discharge method is to be used in preference to the air-discharge method. The former must, however, be implemented in such a way that there is a true metal-to-metal contact with the EUT.
Repetitive discharges can really be used only to localize weak spots or to find sensitive conditions in program sequences quickly. Single pulses then have to be used for a detailed investigation and assessment of the interference sensitivity.

An electrostatic discharge always exhibits high frequency properties with parts of the spectrum extending to well beyond 1 GHz. Screening and filtering measures must therefore also be effective up into these frequency ranges.
The test conditions must always be documented exactly including photos of the test rig, information about the type and number of discharges, details of the prevailing climatic conditions, comments regarding the effects observed, etc.
