Description

The EM Test NX5 bsp-1-300-16 is a compact, multifunction transient immunity generator for evaluating electrical and electronic equipment against surge, EFT/burst, and power-fail events. It delivers up to 5 kV open-circuit combination-wave surge voltage with up to 2.5 kA short-circuit current, plus EFT/burst output adjustable to 5.5 kV. The built-in single-phase coupling decoupling network supports EUT supplies up to 300 V and 16 A AC or DC, reducing external hardware and simplifying test setup.

Designed for IEC/EN 61000-4-4 and IEC/EN 61000-4-5 testing, the NX5 is well suited for pre-compliance investigations, full-compliance programs, product development, and troubleshooting. Its power-fail functions also support IEC/EN 61000-4-11 and IEC/EN 61000-4-29 applications when paired with the appropriate external equipment. External coupling networks and capacitive coupling clamps are available for three-phase power, signal, and data-line testing.

Operators can configure tests from the color touchscreen or control the system remotely through Ethernet, USB, or optical interfaces. Preprogrammed standard routines, Quick Start controls, selectable polarity, phase-angle synchronization, monitoring outputs, interlocks, and EUT protection features help make testing efficient and repeatable. Automatic recognition of the connected EUT power configuration enables only valid coupling paths, helping operators avoid setup errors and move efficiently between programmed test sequences during demanding laboratory work.

EFT/Burst Table Top Setup

When using the coupling clamp, the minimum distance between the coupling plates and all other conductive surfaces (including the generator), except the ground reference plane beneath the coupling clamp and beneath the EUT, shall be at least 0.5 m.

The test generator and the coupling network should be connected to the reference ground plane (acc. to high frequency requirements).
- The equipment under test must be isolated from the reference ground plane. The distance should be 10 cm.
Being part of the EUT, these requirements are also recommended for all connected cables. The EUT should only be grounded if this is recommended by the installation guideline. For safety reasons, the test without any ground connection should be conducted as well (at 100MHz 1 m ground cable lenght has an impedance of about 600 Ω)
- Whenever possible the test set-up and the cabling should always be the same; e.g. for testing power lines it would be possible to fix the cables on the test table for all tests in the same way.
- Lines under test and all other lines should be decoupled strictly.

The exact capabilities of each test system will depend on the model ordered. However, in its most common configuration, the bsp-1-300-16, it will have capabilities for combination wave surge testing, EFT/Burst testing, as well as power-fail testing, which typically requires external equipment.

Yes. The EM Test NX5 has a built-in coupling decoupling network (CDN), however it can be ordered up to a maximum of 400 Volts, 32 Amps for single-phase applications. However, in its most common configuration, the bsp-1-300-16, it is limited to 300 Volts 16 Amps. It’s worth noting that some higher power CDNs require 400 Volt models.

The compact NX5 can provide capabilities up to 5 kV for combination wave surge testing to IEC 61000-4-5 and 5.5 kV for EFT or Burst testing to IEC 61000-4-4.

Yes. For testing three-phase applications, an external coupling decoupling network (CDN) would be required. Depending on the voltage and current requirements for the EUT, this will determine which CDN and corresponding transient generator will be best suited for testing.
