Electrical Fast Transients/Burst Immunity Rentals
EN/IEC 61000-4-4 - relates to electrical fast transient (EFT) testing, providing immunity requirements and testing procedures. The goal of this International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard is a reproducible guide to evaluate equipment when exposed to fast transient/bursts on supply, signal, and control and earth ports. This Standard can be purchased on the IEC Webstore websiteThe most recent 2012 version 3 cancels out previous publications and helps to clarify simulator specifications, test criteria, and testing. Another term for this testing, burst testing, is because of the quickly reoccurring surges. It defines test voltage waveform, range of test levels, test equipment, verification procedures of test equipment, test set-up, and test procedures. Given the fast rise time of this occurrence grounding during testing is crucial.  EN/IEC 61000-4-4 Burst/EFT Wave Shape
Testing Testing per this standard separates criteria based upon the environment in which the EUT is expected to operate. There are 5 different classification that require different test levels. Test level one is a well-protected environment with shielded power lines, most often a computer room. Level two is a protected environment which most often a control room for industrial electrical plants. The third and fourth levels being typical and severe industrial environments. The final level is based on the special situation or environment that the equipment operates. When conducting this type of testing it is crucial to reference the standard to confirm test levels.

The test setup for this standard requires a ground reference plane, coupling device, decoupling device (if needed), and the EFT/Burst test generator. When attempting to replicate the setup for electrical fast transients per this IEC standard it beneficial to have a preexisting setup, specifically for IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD). The electrostatic discharge setup has a large amount of cross over for burst testing and is an ideal starting point. When attempting to replicate this setup it is important to ensure a good ground connection exists.

For electrical fast transients (EFT) equipment rentals we offer a diverse set of products to meet testing needs. We carry products from all the major suppliers including Teseq, EM Test, EMC Partner, Haefely, and many others. We also offer rentals of CDNs and other accessories needed to preform EFT testing. The more common rental units for EFT testing include the NSG 3060, Axos 8, NX5, and UCS500n7. These EMI EFT products come with an A2LA accredited calibration and free technical support included with the rental.
