Overview
General Testing Information
This automotive standard covers a variety of testing for heavy-duty vechiles including the electrical environment (section 4.13). This standard gives recommended practices and EMC testing methods for electrical environments from natural and vehicle-induced sources that influence the performance and reliability of vehicle and tractor/trailer electronic components. It also relates to stationary components which also use the vehicle-based components requirements. This standard is aimed at being used during the design phase so as to develop Immunity system to commonly occurring environmental occurrences. Given the nature of truck and tractor systems three types of transients are tested for load dump, inductive switching, and mutual coupling. This standard often refers to SAE J1113 as a reference for EMI and EMC testing procedures and test levels.
Common Sections & Equipment
Given the overlapping of this manufacturer based standard with the more commonly referenced international International Standards Organization (ISO) standards there is often additional reference materials and solutions available.
- 4.13.2.2.1Conducted Transients (Pulses 1-5)
- 4.13.2.2.2 Coupled Transients - SAE J1113-12
- 4.13.3.4.2 Radiated Electric Field immunity - SAE J1113-21 usually above 100 V/m
- 4.13.2.2.3 Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Load Dump - 4.13.2.2.1 a. (Pulse 5)
This pulse, number 5, part of the conducted transients section within the electrical environment section is often referenced by a variety of other international and manufacturer standards. Appendix B within the standard offers additional information on this more commonly occurring event and section 4.13.2.2 "Effects on Performance" also specifically mentions it. Appendix B specifically focuses on considerations with using a clamping device and provides general guidelines should tailor specific waveform medications be required.
