    Automotive EMC Test Equipment

Automotive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing encompasses a broad range of emissions and immunity evaluations designed to ensure that electronic components neither generate excessive electromagnetic interference nor are adversely affected by it. The unique electrical environment within modern vehicles—including high-current power systems, electric motors, switching electronics, and wireless communications—requires specialized test methods and equipment that differ substantially from those used in commercial or industrial applications.

Automotive EMC requirements are driven by a combination of international standards and individual OEM specifications. Commonly referenced standards include ISO 7637, ISO 11452, SAE J1113, and CISPR 25, while manufacturer-specific requirements such as Ford FMC1278, LV124, and other OEM test specifications often introduce additional procedures, test levels, or acceptance criteria. Although many of these standards share similar test methods, the required waveforms, severity levels, and test configurations can vary considerably depending on the vehicle manufacturer and application.

The equipment used for automotive EMC testing reflects these specialized requirements, particularly for conducted immunity and electrical transient testing. Automotive transient generators produce the unique pulse waveforms specified by ISO and OEM standards to simulate real-world disturbances such as load dumps, inductive switching, and supply interruptions. Multi-function systems, such as the Teseq NSG 5500, combine numerous automotive transient and immunity tests into a single platform, allowing laboratories to perform a wide range of standardized and manufacturer-specific EMC evaluations with one integrated instrument.
