Description
SAE J1113 Surface Vehicle Standard - Electromagnetic Compatibility Measurement Procedures and Limits for Components of Vehicles, Boats (up to 15 m), and Machines (Except Aircraft) (16.6 Hz to 18 GHz)
Overview
General Testing Information
SAE J1113 - 2013 - By the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) applies to measurement of voltage transient immunity and within the applicable frequency ranges, audio (AF) and radio frequency (RF) immunity, and conducted and radiated emissions. This Automotive EMC standard covers conducted Immunity in sections 2, 3, 4, 11, and 12. It covers radiated immunity in sections 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, and 27. The final section as it relates SAE J-1113-42 which focuses on battery power line emissions and transients. This standard can be purchased at the SAE Website. The standard defines EMC testing levels in three categories, 12 Volt systems on passenger car and light-duty trucks, 12 Volt systems on heavy-duty trucks, and 24 Volt systems.
Common Sections & Equipment
Given the overlapping of this manufacturer based standard with the more commonly referenced international International Standards Organization (ISO) standards there is often additional reference materials and solutions available.
- SAE J1113-4: Bulk Current Injection - BCI Probe, Waveform Generator (Amp, Sig Gen, etc)
- SAE J1113-11: Transient Immunity - Teseq NSG 5500 & PA 5840/EM Test LD200N, UCS200N, & VDS200N.
- SAE J1113-21: Radiated Immunity 10kHz-18Ghz - Amplifier(s), Antennas, Signal Generators, Probes Etc.

Equipment
Conducted Immunity - Transients SAE J1113-11 & 12
This standard, being explicitly stated technically equivalent to the more common ISO 7637 series of automotive standards, much of the waveform requirements have significant crossover to a variety of other standards. The two most commonly used system for automotive transients including sections 11 and 12 of this standard are the EM Test (UCS200N, VDS200N, & LD200N) and the Teseq automotive system (NSG 5500 & PA5840). Both test systems offer compliance to a variety of pulses, however should you not require the full capabilities of the NSG 5500 for all of -11 & -12 the EM Test module systems are ideal. For a breakout of individual capabilities of the EM Test series of generators, you can click here.Transient Specialists
